We are nearing the end of our third Sustainable September initiative, a month dedicated to embracing sustainable practices, supporting our local community, and sharing knowledge to help address climate challenges.
We began the month with a Meat Free Monday, encouraging colleagues to share photos and recipes to inspire one another to make more sustainable food choices. The annual litter pick was once again one of the highlights of the month, providing an opportunity to make a visible and positive impact within our local community. In previous years, members of the public have stopped to thank us for our efforts, making the experience even more rewarding and reinforcing the value of giving back to the area in which we live and work.

This year, we were also pleased to arrange something particularly special: a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing. This thought-provoking film presents the latest evidence on the climate and nature crisis and explores what it means for the UK. Given the periods of extreme weather experienced throughout the summer, the content felt especially relevant, particularly as the film opened by highlighting the increasing impacts of severe weather events. The screening was followed by an engaging discussion, allowing attendees to reflect on the key messages and share their thoughts on the issues presented.
The event was organised with support from the National Emergency Briefing team, who provide all the resources needed to host a local screening. Initiatives such as this are important in helping to raise awareness of climate-related challenges and encouraging meaningful conversations around both mitigation and adaptation.
We concluded Sustainable September by inviting all staff to make ESG-focused charitable donations through our interactive well-being app by YuLife. Everyone who participated was entered into a prize draw for the opportunity to win a small sustainability-themed prize and Rob was the lucky winner.
As another successful Sustainable September comes to a close, the HWA Sustainability Group would like to thank all of our team. Through collective action, awareness, and community engagement, we can all play a role in creating a more sustainable future.
