This multi-faceted project involved a number of different agencies working together to move a structurally fragile signal box dating from the 19th century safely from its position next to a level crossing to a new resting place behind the nearby station.

Aspects dealt with by HWA included a structural assessment of the signal box and the design of temporary strengthening such that it could be moved without it falling apart. A steel lifting frame was then designed to attach the signal box to the crane hook. We also collaborated with the lifting contractors, advising on the positioning of the crane to ensure the outriggers were stable, taking into account the possible presence of buried services below the crane. The lift required overnight closure of the railway and road, and it was safely moved onto a new base, also designed by HWA.
