Working with Frank Shaw Associates Architects and D & D Consulting Ltd HWA were appointed as a joint team by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to undertake the procurement and construction design of a fire station off Carlton Road in Dewsbury.

This scheme included a number of engineering challenges including a raised building level due to flood risk and the presence of a culverted watercourse passing through the site. Prior to the new development, the site was occupied by a historic mill building which required demolition.

To ensure the robustness of the culvert a significant remedial works were required including the construction of a new cap and other internal repair works. The external slab over the culvert was designed in order that it could be used as a Fire Service training area. The project included a vehicle wash down, an appliance refuelling facility, a training tower and a Young Fire Squad building on the site, as well as a substantial training water retention tank and grey water recycling facilities.

Negotiation with the Environment Agency and local drainage authority was required to provide an appropriately sustainable drainage solution into the Dewsbury Beck.
