News on regeneration project in Brighton

HWA’s student accommodation portfolio continues to grow on the south coast with this, the 5th such collaboration with McLaren Property.

A 5-storey build within Brighton’s regeneration area, HWA have been working alongside McLaren Property and Morgan Carn Architects on the project since its inception, providing civil and structural expertise through the pre-purchase and pre-planning project stages. Director Dan Bailey says, ‘we are really pleased to be working with McLaren on the London Road development – transforming what is currently an inefficient and underutilised site into much needed student accommodation and fresh retail units. The site presents a great opportunity to enhance the local area and contribute dramatically to its regeneration’.

The development will replace an outdated building and provide 156 student bedrooms above new retail units on the ground floor with refreshed shop frontage. With a BREAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of ‘Excellent’, the project includes many sustainable features such as air source heat pumps and planted outdoor spaces maintained using recycled rainwater. The development will be car free with cycle route access and have solar panels and a green roof. The London Road development could also free up many former family homes as students choose to live in purpose-built accommodation.

HWA will be providing structural engineering consultancy and design on this project, with construction due to begin in mid 2022.
